September 23, 2024 Science Photo Library / Alamy Stock Photo Another $125 million in funding has been awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy to Ascend Elements which is part of a federal effort to boost battery production and recycling for electric vehicles. Ascend Elements will put the federal award toward a new battery recycling process at facilities in Hopkinsville, Ky. in partnership with Orbia. The companies will extract graphite from the recycled batteries, process and enhance it at an Orbia facility in Louisiana, and then sell the new battery-grade graphite. White House National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi said in a statement the funding is, “helping support the technologies that we need in the market today, the components that we will need in the near future, and the innovative technologies we need to advance our vision for a circular domestic battery supply chain that positions the United States to continue leading the global effort on clean energy.”
