MEDIANAMA Slides We missed this earlier: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has urged machine-to-machine service providers to register themselves by September 30. M2M is a form of data communication between devices that does not require human intervention. It has a range of applications such as point-of-sale (PoS) payments, traffic optimization, alarm systems, and remote diagnosis of vehicular issues. Besides M2M service providers, DoT has also asked wireless personal area networks (WPAN) and wireless local area network (WLAN) connectivity providers for M2M services to also register themselves. For context, WPAN includes short range connections like Bluetooth and WLAN includes communication via radio waves. The authority says that those who fail to register themselves run the risk of losing telecom connectivity. DoT first came out with registration requirements for M2M service and connectivity providers in 2022 . As of June this year, India has 52.52 million cellular mobile connections. Of these, Airtel continues to have the highest M2M connections at 28.29 million with a market share of 53.86%. Conditions for registration: Registered entities have to comply with Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements. They have to submit updated information regarding the M2M end device (like the International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI number), make, model, and registration of the device (of devices such as cars, and PoS devices. The registered M2M service providers/connectivity providers also have to submit the name and address of the custodian of the device to their telecom service provider. Registered entities have to take steps to ensure that objectionable, obscene, or unauthorized content does not circulate on their devices. They also have to provide authorized entities with a decryption facility for the content riding on their networks. Further, such entities also have to assist the government in counteracting “espionage, subversive act, sabotage, or any other unlawful activity”. Also read:
