We rank early-stage VCs in Latin America based on their portfolio strength and their ability to predict future winners.
Latin America’s startups have been hit especially hard by the slowdown in VC dealmaking. The median deal size in the region plummeted last quarter, while quarterly funding and deals have tumbled from 2021’s highs.
Nevertheless, VCs continue to bet on LatAm’s startups — particularly at the early stages, which represent roughly 4 out of 5 deals in the region.
But which investors stand out from the pack when it comes to picking future winners?
To answer this, we used CB Insights data to rank early-stage LatAm VCs based on their portfolio strength and performance. Beyond how many early-stage deals these VCs back, our scoring model factors in whether portfolio companies went on to raise additional funding, become unicorns, or exit.
Notable examples from the list include:
- Since 2020, Bossa Invest has backed over 200 deals to early-stage startups in LatAm — more than any other investor on this list. Roughly 2 out of 3 (69%) of these investments have subsequently raised a funding round.
- Monashees+ has invested in 4 early-stage companies that subsequently reached unicorn status. These include Nowports, a digital freight forwarding company, and Merama, an e-commerce brand acquirer. Both are based in Mexico.
- Across its 37 early-stage investments since 2020, Astella Investimentos has seen 4 portfolio companies get acquired. Notable exits include Brazil-based companies Kenoby (acquired by Gupy) and Skore (acquired by UOL EdTech).
