From fleet management to digital freight forwarding to autonomous trucking, startups in these areas are driving innovation and efficiency in the commercial trucking space.
The trucking industry, slated to reach a value of $1T by 2024, is facing a number of challenges.
For one, the global supply chain is still reeling from Covid-19, with shipping ports across the world experiencing long delays. Meanwhile, the driver shortage, which began plaguing the trucking industry before the pandemic, persists.
Businesses are also facing higher fuel prices, customer demand for faster shipping, and shipping costs.
Now, trucking and logistics companies across the country are scrambling to hire and find solutions that maximize efficiency and minimize costs across the supply chain, like new transportation management systems and electronic logging devices. Meanwhile, investors looking to capitalize on these opportunities have poured over $10B into startups in the space.
We used the CB Insights database and Trucking Tech Collection to identify 60+ startups in the trucking tech space that are developing such solutions, across categories such as freight management, logistics brokering, workflow automation, and autonomous trucking.
We broadly define trucking tech startups as companies developing technology-enabled services and products focused on freight trucking (such as trucking-oriented marketplace platforms), fleet management solutions, and on-board monitoring and tracking systems.
Industrial companies and startups providing broad software solutions without a significant trucking emphasis are excluded from our analysis. Warehousing solutions and robots are also not included. Companies working on last-mile logistics or vehicle electrification are treated separately.
