We rank active angel investing groups based on who can actually pick winners — not just write checks.
2022 has been a record year for angels.
Despite an overall slowdown in VC dealmaking, this year has seen angel investing groups participate in 1,361 angel or seed-stage deals worth a combined $2.9B. That deal total builds on 2021’s previous record of 1,252 deals.
There was no shortage of ambitious ideas — from developing realistic 3D holograms to creating digital twins of cells for drug discovery.
But which angel investing groups are best at predicting future winners?
To answer this, we looked at angel investing groups that have made at least 4 angel investments in the past 2 years and tracked their investments since 2011. Then, we ranked these groups based on portfolio strength and performance — including across factors like whether portfolio companies went on to raise funding, become unicorns, and exit.
Notable examples from the list include:
- Gaingels has been the most prolific angel group in 2022, investing in 292 deals, 200 of which were seed or angel rounds. Notable seed or angel deals this year went to Binance.US, Flycoin, and Gravitics.
- Kima Ventures has inked 58 deals in 2022, of which 54 were seed or angel rounds. Some of Kima Ventures’ most notable seed/angel investments from the past decade include Carta, Wise, and NomNomNow.
- Musical duo The Chainsmokers made the Top 50 list with 11 investments since mid-2021, 5 of which were seed or angel rounds. Their portfolio also had the highest average Mosaic Score (which measures company health and momentum) in our analysis. Notable seed/angel investments include Pomelo and CreatorDAO.
