We mined eBay’s acquisitions and partnerships to discern the company's strategic priorities.
EBay is narrowing its focus.
The company’s selloffs of eBay India, eBay South Korea, StubHub, and eBay Classifieds, along with the closure of its Turkish marketplace GittiGidiyor, mark a move away from trying to sell everything on its marketplace. Instead, eBay, which rose to fame as a specialized-item auction marketplace, is returning to its core business model.
But the landscape is crowded with high-end, hyper-specific resale marketplaces, like streetwear platform Grailed and watch marketplace Chrono24.
To stay competitive, eBay aims to position itself as a trustworthy destination for high-value purchases. It opened a store in New York City in November 2022 where consumers can appraise, exchange, and sell luxury goods.
Using CB Insights data, we uncovered the 4 most important strategic priorities highlighted by eBay’s recent acquisitions, investments, and partnerships. We then categorized companies by their business relationships with eBay across these priorities:
- Authentication services
- Category specialist marketplaces
- Payment & financing
- Shipment & fulfillment enablement
