Microsoft is betting that generative AI could tip the competitive scales in its favor for decades to come.
The tech giant has poured billions into ChatGPT maker OpenAI to become one of its largest stakeholders, while also providing computing infrastructure to power the startup’s resource-hungry operations.
Through this investment, Microsoft has gained early access to some of the most advanced AI capabilities on the market. It has already integrated OpenAI’s technology — including its just-released GPT-4 model — across its product line, from Bing to GitHub to Azure.
Beyond OpenAI, it has placed bets on a number of generative AI startups in areas like computing, mapping, and gaming.
