SHARE Starting at the end of 2025, Volvo Penta will begin limited-scale production of its fully integrated, advanced hybrid-electric solutions across its heavy-duty range. Volvo Penta image. Volvo Penta has introduced a new hybrid-electric system designed for commercial vessels, emphasizing features that enhance the operational environment and efficiency. According to the company, the system reduces noise and vibrations during electric mode operation, improving conditions for both crew and passengers. The integration of Joystick Driving, Joystick Docking, Dynamic Positioning System (DPS), and Assisted Docking in Pure Electric mode aims to enable precise and effortless vessel control. Additionally, the company states the system allows access to emission-free zones and complies with IMO II/III and EPA Tier 3 standards, which Volvo Penta highlights as a significant advantage for commercial operators working in environmentally regulated areas. Volvo Penta also notes the package is designed for easy installation and management, offering a single point of service for the fully integrated helm-to-propeller system. Johan Inden, President of the Marine Business at Volvo Penta, stated that the hybrid-electric package represents a major advancement in marine technology. "This system exemplifies our dedication to pioneering flexible, seamless performance through innovative hybridization and electrification," he said. The Volvo Penta hybrid-electric package is a fully integrated system with Volvo Penta overseeing all components from helm-to-propeller. It features the Volvo Penta D13 IPS 900/1050/1200/1350 Hybrid, a 160 kW electric motor, and optimized batteries, offering strong performance, maneuverability, and efficiency, the press release noted. The system allows for various modes—Pure Electric, Hybrid, and Cross-Over. The package also enables the use of the combustion engine as a generator, recharging batteries during voyages or while docked, which Volvo Penta claims can significantly reduce or eliminate the need for additional generator run-time. The hybrid-electric system is integrated with the Volvo Penta Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system, which coordinates features across the different drive modes. This integration supports functions such as Joystick Driving, Joystick Docking, Low Speed, DPS, and Assisted Docking in both Pure Electric and Hybrid modes. Volvo Penta also mentions the inclusion of Type Approved Display (TAD) screens with a hybrid-electric driver interface that provides information on drive modes and battery status. The EVC system enables engine status monitoring, remote diagnostics, and data sharing, along with the ability for remote software updates through Volvo Penta’s global service network. "Our Volvo Penta hybrid-electric package integrates state-of-the-art technology to deliver exceptional performance and reliability,” said Inden. “The advanced EVC system and new drive modes provide unparalleled control and efficiency, enhancing the operational capabilities of commercial vessels.” Volvo Penta's hybrid-electric package is designed to simplify maintenance and support with a fully integrated helm-to-propeller system managed by a single supplier. The system's reliability and redundancy are intended to support continuous operation, while reduced noise and vibrations in electric mode contribute to a better work environment for the crew and more comfort for passengers during long operations. The system's capability to switch seamlessly between electric and combustion engines aims to extend service intervals and improve cost management. Volvo Penta states that the system will allow commercial operators to meet emission regulations while optimizing operational efficiency. Volvo Penta plans to begin deliveries of the D13 IPS hybrid-electric package by the end of 2025.
