Chinese Tea Brand Heytea to Slow Down Store Opening Pace

Sep 18, 2024

(Yicai) Sept. 18 -- Chinese tea drink brand Heytea plans to slow down the pace of new store openings in the next months because of changes in the consumption environment and intensified market competition. Heytea will not open new stores in the short run and control the density of its existing stores in the near future, Yicai learned from an internal letter from the Shenzhen-based company. With limited consumption needs and fierce competition, tea brands adopted similar branding strategies and launched similar products, Heytea noted in the letter. Instead, the firm will not go with the flow but unveil more differentiated products and promote its brand, it added. Heytea still saw an increase in the number of stores this year. The company has about 4,300 stores, 1,100 of which were opened this year. Chinese milk tea brands recently saw their profit shrink because of the fierce competition and raging price war. There were 431,753 milk tea stores in China as of Aug. 5, according to catering data platform Canyandata.Com. Net store openings totaled 35,518 in the year ended Aug. 5, compared to about 130,000 store closures. As a result of the complex environment, many tea drink chains began to expand overseas. In July, Heytea opened its first pop-up store in Paris, and Naixue unveiled its first outlet in Singapore. Mixue Bingcheng already has more than 4,000 overseas stores.
